At Infinite Wellness Center, one of our goals as a leader in the Colorado marijuana industry is to provide information and education to the public. One of the questions we are asked most often is, “How much marijuana can you buy in Colorado?” As Colorado marijuana laws have shifted in recent years, it can sometimes be challenging to keep on top of the most up-to-date legal specifics. Here is a quick guide to everything you need to know about how to purchase marijuana in Colorado and use it legally.
Purchasing: How Much and How Often Can You Buy Adult Use (Recreational) Cannabis?
As of June 2016, adults over the age of 21 with valid identification may purchase up to 28 grams of flower per transaction. Transactions are limited to once per day and include an equivalency law that further restricts other categories of cannabis. So, how does this number work out when applied to specific forms of marijuana?
- Concentrates: You can purchase up to 8 grams of concentrate, like the IWC Activated Oil (available at Infinite Wellness Center for just $50 for 4 grams). Each gram of concentrate is equivalent to 3.5 grams of flower when evaluating purchase limits.
- Edibles: You can purchase 800 grams of activated THC in edibles in your single transaction, which gives you room to try a few of the different options at Infinite Wellness Center, like the 100mg Satvia Bonbons ($20) or a 10mg Boysenberry Sucker ($4.50). 100mg of active THC is equivalent to 3.5 grams of flower when evaluating purchase limits.
- Flower: Per a single transaction, you can purchase 1 ounce (28 grams) of flower, with Infinite Wellness Center providing an unbeatable menu of options including Bruce Banner, G13, and Sour Diesel with prices as low as $5.36/gram
Purchasing Medical Marijuana Products
Patients who have successfully registered with the CDPHE to receive a Medical Marijuana Registry (MMR) card can typically purchase up to two ounces per day of flower, concentrates or edibles without equivalency. Therefore, flower and concentrates count as their actual weight (1 gram = 1 gram) and edibles are regulated by THC mg content. Some patients may have an extended plant count for extenuating medical circumstances. For every six additional plants allowed to be grown by the patient, the purchase limit is increased by two ounces. The city of Fort Collins currently restricts this purchase limitation to the patient’s purchase limit once every 7 days.
Colorado has changed purchase limits over time to further refine the regulated sale and possession of cannabis among adults in Colorado. Our purchase limit laws are defined by the Marijuana Enforcement Division of Colorado, Larimer County and the City of Fort Collins.
Possession and Consumption
If you are 21 years of age or older, you may legally possess 1 oz. of marijuana. You absolutely may not possess an opened container of marijuana in your vehicle, including a plastic bag. Consumption is treated much like that of alcohol; that is, you cannot consume marijuana openly and publicly (including edibles, vaporizers, topicals and transdermals). Currently, cannabis is intended to be consumed in a private location. DUI laws apply to those driving under the influence of both medical or recreational cannabis, and federal land (such as Rocky Mountain National Park) still abides by federal law (prohibition).
