It has been reported that 10-30% of people have some sort of insomnia in their lifetime with 10% experiencing severe chronic sleep deprivation. Although not as widely studied and reported as other conditions it is one of the symptoms that cannabis can help with.
There are typically two types of insomnia, primary and secondary. Primary insomnia is when the condition is not the result of another illness or condition, and the secondary is when a condition such as pain causes lack of sleep. Luckily it has been reported that cannabis can help with both types of insomnia!
At Infinite Wellness, we carry some of the best strains available for all types of conditions, and we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the best strains for sleep and insomnia. Due to the characteristics of the two different types of cannabis, sativa and indica, an indica strain or a hybrid with a heavy indica influence is the recommended type of cannabis for sleep and insomnia. Sativa strains have more clear-headed uplifting effects, and indica or indica dominant hybrids usually provide the consumer with a relaxing sedation effect that focuses on the body which is perfect for inducing sleep and battling insomnia.
Before we highlight the particular strains that are best for sleep, we wanted to include a few tips for success specifically geared toward consumption to battle insomnia:
If anxiety is one of the reasons you cannot sleep, go easy on the higher THC strains. They pack a punch and can induce sleep, but excessive dosage can increase anxiety for some. Try a strain with some CBD in it to counter the anxiety effects if you are prone to them.
Aged cannabis tests slightly higher in cannabinol, and as such can induce sleep a lot more than fresh flower. It may not sound as enjoyable, but the effects can be worth it. The rate of degradation can be as high as 0.3% per year with oxygen-rich, warm environments, which is not the ideal storage condition for cannabis.
Edibles help you sleep longer. While smoking and inhalation of cannabis brings much faster effects, edibles last a lot longer, therefore letting you enjoy a longer sleep. Remember to go slow and start small though, as too much can make you too sleepy too fast!
Browse sites like Leafly and Wikileaf for strains that users have reported as “sleepy” and when in doubt, ask your budtender for a recommendation.
Remember individual experience varies slightly so finding what works best for you may take some time and experimentation. These are the strains we currently carry that have been most reported to help with sleep and insomnia:
Hash Plant (Indica)
Currently testing at 30%, this heavy indica gives a creeping euphoric high with many consumers reporting sleepy effects. With a classic peppery, floral hash plant flavor, this strain is the parent strain to a lot of popular hybrids. Hash Plant is testing at 21-30% THC.
Pre-98 Bubba Kush (Indica)
This Cannabis Cup winning strain is a cross of Chemdawg x Lemon Thai x Hindu Kush and is very high in CBD which makes it great for insomnia. Another one of the highest rated “sleepy” strains on Leafly, the low THC and high CBD make it great for a before bed medicine. Pre-98 Bubba Kush is testing at 8-9% THC and 11-16% CBD.
OG Kush (Indica)
OG Kush is cherished for its ability to crush stress under the weight of its heavy euphoria. It carries an earthy pine and sour lemon scent with woody undertones, an aroma that has become the signature of OG Kush varieties and descendants. With OG Kush, patients most commonly cite improvements in migraines, ADD/ADHD, and stress disorders, which can allow for relaxing sleep. High in myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene and testing at 19-29% THC.
Corleone Kush (Indica)
A nice cheesy aroma and intensely colorful buds mark this great indica. With a nice body high and deep relaxation effects it is great for inducing sleep. Corleone Kush is testing at 16-25% THC with trace amounts of CBD.
Another great indica with heavy body relaxation effects, G13 is rumored to have been bred by the government from Afghani roots. The classic heavy indica sleepiness this strain provides makes it a great choice for insomnia. G13 is testing at 18-27% THC.
Humdinger OG (Indica)
A sweet, spicy and smokey aroma on this potent indica lead to a buzzing body high that can help you drift off to dreamland. Traces of the relaxing terpene Linalool can help destress, and the 20-30% THC testing can provide the night-time knockout many need to get rest.
As you can see, there are many options out there for treating insomnia and inducing sleep. The majority of this list and what we carry currently are indicas, but an indica dominant hybrid is also a great idea for those suffering from lack of sleep be it primary or secondary insomnia. A higher CBD content can also aid in relaxation and sleep inducement. Our menu is constantly changing, so make sure to check it out and see what we currently have in stock.
